S-Kids!
Skeptikids is a Hands-On Science Program for kids that lives by the mantra that Science is a Verb! Our goal is to encourage Scientific Inquiry among children! That may sound lofty and grand, but it’s not really. At its core, Scientific Inquiry is a curiosity about the natural world! And You know what, kids are born that way!
Skeptikids programs and activities will vary with each chapter and the locally available resources. However, there are 3 core programs that all Skeptikids chapters are required to: Do science, Teach Science and Celebrate Science!
1. Do Science
There are several ways that kids can contribute to Real Science. They can contribute to Galaxy Zoo, begin an AAVSO observing program, work with local environmental or conservation groups to collect data or care for at risk species. The point is, even kids can contribute to real science. There is no age limit or educational requirements needed to contribute to mankind’s knowledge.
2. Teach Science

2009 is our first year running, and as this new school year begins, Skeptikids will be producing a series of short, 3-9 minute videos, starred by kids, covering a variety of science and urban myth topics. Think of it as iCarly meets Mythbusters. All chapters are asked to produce at least one written and produced video. We publish through Teacher Tube (as well as You Tube) to allow teachers to use them in the classroom.
3. Celebrate Science!
Yuri’s Night is an international celebration held on April 12 every year to commemorate the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, and the first Space Shuttle launch on April 12, 1981.
Skeptikids are REQUIRED to party down once a year in honor of this event! As Dr. Phil Plait said in his greeting to Us earlier this year, human history can be divided into two parts: before Man went into space, and after. What better reason can there be to dance, party and do the limbo?
If You are interested in starting up a Skeptikids program in Your community, contact us! There is no cost, and we can help You develop the resources that – I promise – are abundant where You live!
